Despite the rapid advancement of AI technologies, many of the structural implications for news organizations and our information environment remain poorly understood. This article aims to fill that gap by examining the use of AI in news organizations with an eye toward its effects on both journalistic practices and the public arena.

In my interviews with news workers, they raised several concerns about how the use of these technologies might change the nature of journalism. These include a potential increase in “churnalism,” whereby journalists are reduced to writing repackaged content rather than original reporting; the possibility that errors or bias might creep into the news; and the way that AI may shift the balance of power toward platform companies, potentially undercutting publishers’ autonomy business models and highlighting their growing control of the information ecosystem.
For the time being, the systems that most news organizations use mostly aid journalists, rather than replacing them. But that is not a given for the long term. If the use of advanced AI continues to prioritize the interests of managers over those of journalists and their audiences, it is easy to imagine more sophisticated LLMs eventually replacing copy editors or illustrators in some publications. At that point, the technology would be doing a significant disservice to its users.
